my name is Linda. My computer is working very slowly nowadays (with 1GB of RAM). I don't have any anti-virus software installed. A friend of mine told me to install an anti-virus but I am unable to visit the websites of many anti virus software. Do you think that there is something wrong with my operating system? I think your computer is infected by the conficker worm. Conficker has been publicized as one of the most advanced viruses ever to hit the internet.
Once installed, the worm does the following things:
* Copies itself to the system directory as a randomly-named DLL file
* Adds itself as a randomly-named system service for persistence after reboot
* Disables certain Windows services that might aid in cleanup or detection of the worm
* Deletes existing system restore points
* Disables access to multiple websites related to antivirus and security, most notably Microsoft and Windows Update.
* Spreads through the local Microsoft network using password brute-forcing or MS08-067 exploit
* Adds itself to any removable/network drives using an autorun.inf file
* Adjusts the Windows TCP/IP settings to allow a greater number of simultaneous connections in order to facilitate the spread of the wrom
* Waits three hours, then attempts to download additional code by generating 250 different domain names and connecting to each via HTTP. Each day a new set of 250 domain names will be generated.
But dont worry. There are ways to tackle this worm. You can remove it using the tool provided by F-secure. You may not be able to visit the website by typing the site address because it is there in the blocklist of the worm. But you can download it by typing the ip address.

You should clean the Windows registry after removing the worm.

Thank you so much. Prince you are a genius. My computer was infected by the conficker worm.The ip trick worked and I successfully downloaded F-secure.The program wiped out the worm from my computer.
How do I clean the registry? I don't know anything about anti-virus software.Which is the best one out there?

You are always welcome Linda.
You need software to clean the registry. Ccleaner or Crap cleaner is very good software. This software can be a bit harsh on the computer. So always backup your registry before cleaning it. And don't use the program frequently.
NOD32 from ESET is the best AV software out there. ESET SMART SECURITY is another product from the same company. Smart Security offers additional internet protection also. But you will have to pay a fair amount of money to get one of these.
Avira antivir, Avast Home edition and AVG are some free alternatives.
It is always good to have an anti-spyware software also. SUPERAntiSpyware is a very good one and it is a freeware.
So use an AV software and stay safe! :-)
